The Middle Eastern lumber import remains low

The Middle East imported approximately 269,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (-6% compared to 2017) from main European exporters and North America. The import from Russia was 80,000 m³ (+10%), Romania 50,000 m³ (-18%), Germany 34,000 m³ (+11%), Sweden 37,000 m³ (+3%) and Finland 24,000 m³ (-43%).

The import of softwood lumber from main European exporters and North America totaled 545,000 m³ during January-February (-4% compared to 2017). The import from Russia totaled 162,000m³ (-5%), Romania 101,000 m³ (+2%), Germany 76,000 m³ (+13%), Finland 47,000 m³ (-38%) and Sweden 64,000 m³ (-7%).

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in the Middle East is increasing from a low level. However, the trend line remains at a low level (compared to the last nine years.)

The import of softwood lumber in February was less than same month in 2017 and 2016.

The trend line for the import in Saudi Arabia is decreasing at a low level (compared to the last nine years). The trend lines for Iran, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Syria are increasing. The trend line for Jordan is at a low level for the country.

Leading exporters: Sweden, Finland, Russia, Romania, Austria, Slovenia, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Canada and U.S.

The trend lines for Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain are increasing. The trend lines for Qatar and Yemen are decreasing.

The two largest importing countries in the region: Saudi Arabia (-17%) and Iran (-3%) decrease their import during January-February (compared to 2017). The third largest importing country is United Arab Emirates, which increases the import with 14% during the same period.

Russia is the main exporter of softwood lumber to the Middle East and the trend line for the export is increasing again when we include the figures for February. The trend lines for Romania and Canada levels off at low levels for each country. Sweden, Finland and the Baltics have decreasing trend lines. The trend lines for Germany and Austria-Slovenia are increasing.

In terms of market shares to the Middle East; Russia has the largest market share. The trend for the Russian market share is slightly increasing. Second largest market share has Romania and their share has a decreasing trend line at a very low level for the country. The market share trend in Germany and Austria-Slovenia are increasing. The trend for the market share in Sweden, Finland and Canada are decreasing. The trend for the market share for the Baltics levels off at a record high level for the region.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia imported approximately 73,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (-26% compared to 2017) from main European exporters and North America. Saudi Arabia imported 151,000 m³ during January-February (-17%).

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in Saudi Arabia is decreasing at a very low level (compared to the last nine years).

The trend line for Saudi Arabia's import of softwood lumber from Finland is decreasing to the lowest level since 2009 in the beginning of this year. The trend line for Sweden levels off at the lowest level since 2009. The trend lines for Romania and Austria-Slovenia are increasing. The trend lines for Germany, Canada and Russia are decreasing. The trend line for the Baltics levels off at a high level for the region.

The trend line for the import of spruce lumber in Saudi Arabia from main European exporters is decreasing at a low level. The trend line for pine lumber levels off.

United Arab Emirates

United Arab Emirates imported approximately 53,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (+3% compared to 2017) from main European exporters and North America. United Arab Emirates imported approximately 105,000 m³ during January-February (+14%).

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in United Arab Emirates is increasing.

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in United Arab Emirates from Romania is slightly increasing. The trend line for Germany is increasing at a record high level for the country. Also the trend line for Austria-Slovenia is increasing. The trend line for the Baltics is at a high level for the region. The trend line for Canada is decreasing at a very low level for the country.

In terms of market shares (smoothed time series); Romania's market share is decreasing at the lowest level since 2009. The trend for the German market share is increasing at a record high level for the country. The trend line for Austria-Slovenia is increasing. The trend line for Canada is decreasing at a very low level for the country. The trend line for the Baltics is at a high level for the region.

Iran

Iran imported approximately 57,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (+13% compared to 2017) from main European exporters and North America. Iran imported 115,000 m³ during January-February (-3%).

Iran imports softwood lumber mainly from Russia and the trend line for the total import is increasing again when we include the figures for February.

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in Iran from Finland has increased during the past years, but the volume is still low.

Jordan

Jordan imported approximately 19,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (+42% compared to 2017) from leading exporters in Europe and North America. Jordan imported 33,000 m³ during January-February (+6%).

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber from main European exporters and North America is at the lowest level in over ten years.

The trend lines for the import of softwood lumber in Jordan from Sweden, Germany and Canada are increasing. The trend lines for Finland, Romania, Russia and the Baltics are decreasing. The trend lines for Romania, Russia and Canada are at a very low levels for each country.

Lebanon imported approximately 11,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (-20% compared to 2017) from leading exporters in Europe and North America. Lebanon imported 32,000 m³ during January -February (+33%).

The trend lines for the import of softwood lumber in Lebanon from Romania and Germany are increasing. The trend line for Russia levels off at a low level for the country.

Kuwait imported approximately 9,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (-25% compared to 2017) from leading exporters in Europe and North America. Kuwait imported 24,000 m³ during January -February (-8%).

The trend line for the total import of softwood lumber in Kuwait is increasing.

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in Kuwait from Austria-Slovenia is increasing clearly at a record high level for the region. The trend line for Germany levels off at a low level. The trend lines for Romania and Canada are decreasing.

Iraq

Iraq imported approximately 24,000 m³ of softwood lumber in February (+3% compared to 2017) from main European exporters and North America. Iraq imported 43,000 m³ during January-February (+28%).

The trend line for the import of softwood lumber in Iraq is increasing clearly.

The trend lines for import of softwood lumber from Germany and Austria-Slovenia are increasing. The volumes are small.

Syria imports softwood lumber mainly from Russia and Romania. The trend line for Russia is increasing. The trend line for Romania levels off at a very low level.
